Question: Has anyone else ever wondered if they are in a foreign country where everyone speaks the same language? The language that you DON'T speak?
Since I have lived in a foreign country and did not speak the language (well, except for the essentials such as "Where is the toilet?", "Half kilo of ground beef please.", or "I'm sorry!) I know that feeling of being dazed and confused.
So the next question is: Why did I ever think I could write a blog? More specifically: Why did I ever think I could write a blog since I didn't speak the language?
Tonight, I was looking at some blogs where the topic was to compile a list of 10 tips you would give a new blogger. As I started to read through some of them I was stunned.
I repeat...stunned!
I really am speaking a different language because I didn't understand over half of what was being said!
Culture shock!
RSS and Google FriendConnect icons on my page? Facebook and Twitter buttons to connect? (Hmmm...I have a Facebook but didn't know it connects!)
Blog button? Do I HAVE a blog button? Is that anything like a belly button?
Memes? Branding? Blog Frog? Klout?
Digg? Technorati? Reddit? Stumble?
Are we still speaking English here?!
The idea to write down some of my thoughts and feelings seemed so much simpler when I started this back at the beginning of the year. My goal was simply to create...in whatever form that took.
Now, I'm a little worried that I haven't found my "voice".
I'm a blogger that is a bit all over the spectrum.
Some say that's confusing.
I prefer to say I'm eclectic.
Seriously, I'm sure the tips I've been reading are awesome...fabulous...life (well, at least blog) changing.
I can't wait to implement them.
But first, I need a course on how to speak Blog-ish.
Anyone care to join me?
I went to a blog conference this year...hoping to meet other people who love writing and get ides on creativity and, yes, finding that voice! Well, most of the day was spent talking about 'monetizing' blogs...and all the media stuff. Sounded more like a sales conference to me, and I didn't love it. I still consider myself a beginning blogger, but one thing I've figured out is that I blog for myself...to write, create, respond to prompts I find interesting. To look at and talk about my scrapbooking from new angles, and to connect with people "out there" who I feel drawn to throught what they write or photograph. I blog for me! I'm sure I love my blog more than anyone, and am happy to share it with anyone who stops by...just a few thoughts!
ReplyDeleteHi From 'Her Cup Runs Over'! Great post! I am still "trying" to speak the language and yes it's a bit crazy! I am learning from a dear friend, but don't quite have it all down...probably never will! I will just do what I like to do and share...all that jibberish will come. :)

ReplyDeleteI'm laughing. I love this. This is me, 100%. I'm almost completely blog-techno illiterate. I blog to just to blog, to write, to create something and hope that someone somewhere has a little bit of appreciation or admiration for it.

This is exactly how I felt the first few months into blogging, and I jumped into with a stupid grin on my face not realizing. But, eventually you learn. And, people are nice and answer questions!
ReplyDeleteYeah I know what you mean! Sometimes it feels like the actual post is just a tenth of what blogging entails. Although I am much more familiar with the "blogging culture" now I do try to keep in mind that there are no rights or wrongs in blogging. Or rules one should follow. Not in my opinion anyway. For me, the most important thing about blogging is to enjoy it.

funny :-) "blog-ish" :-) a year ago I barely knew what a blog was – and now I know almost all of those words you wrote about. I guess I have learned a new language – maybe I'll add that to my bio. I know that Laska the love Kitty does his guest posts written in Laskish :-) one thing I found – is that we all need to find out why we're blogging – and a place just to create is just as important as a mega-blog by a rockstar blogger. And I quiet a little bit as I write this next part – I guess we all need to find what we want, what we love, and God willing, do it.
